While the conflict raged, military analyst S.L.A Marshall commenced debriefing frontline units freshly introduced to warfare. His subsequent 1947 publication, Men Against Fire, revealed that merely 15-20% of combat infantry discharged their firearms—the majority avoided confrontation. These soldiers followed commands and maintained formations, presenting the exterior of military engagement while avoiding actual combat. By conventional organizational measures, these troops were physically present, yet four-fifths never engaged their weapons.
